James Gunn debunks DC rumor about Will Smith return
Even though the studio behind the DC universe has fallen into disrepair, what with corporate mergers, canceled projects leaving scars, and some actors creating chaos, there are still some bright spots in the future of the franchise. Chief among these is James Gunn’s corner full of eccentric characters, including Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad Project.
On the television side, Gun World continues unabated, reassuring white-haired creative fans about a second season of Peacemaker during the cancellation of Batgirl. Gunn has also provided a loose production window for the project, indicating that filming could begin within the next few months.
The film side of things is a little less clear. Even as David Ayer’s revamp of 2016’s Suicide Squad of the Gun was generally well received, the producer has left the door open for his next feature project within the universe. While he may very well come into the squad at some point, it appears he is interested in exploring more of what DC has to offer first.
In the absence of any real news about the future of Suicide Squad within the DCEU, rumors are swirling fast, though some creatives are working hard to straighten the record.
Gun clarifies rumors about the return of Suicide Squad’s Will Smith

James Gunn, writer-director of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy projects at Marvel, once again debunked a new rumor about the future of the Suicide Squad franchise on Twitter.
User @greyhardn77 re-circulated pop culture commentator Mickey Sutton’s claim about the future of the DCU, sharing that Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly pushing for a Suicide Squad starring Will Smith as Deadshot. Were. What’s more, as per the rumour, “Iyer is at the forefront of directing it.”
Now Mickey Sutton is saying that WBD wants a Suicide Squad 3 with Will Smith, but they don’t want it to follow a James Gunn version. He said that Iyer is leading the way to direct it.
In response to a question about whether or not this rumor was true, Gunn gave a brief but clear answer, stating that “it is not.”
What’s next for Suicide Squad?
While the rumors about the future of the DCEU are few, if not many, Gunn has done his best to set the record straight in the past regarding the projects he is involved in. In such a situation, the fans have started believing in his words.
This most recent bout of explanation seems equally believable. Even though the rumor itself seemed unlikely enough, the additional sprinkling of skepticism provided by Gunn makes the matter all the more clear.
Nevertheless, this rumor is still interesting. The DC fanbase has proven resilient before, revealing projects and changes that seemed impossible. However, in this case it seems that this incident of fan’s craze is just that. Gunn’s work in the DCEU, while not quite as beloved, is still generally well regarded, and probably won’t be erased or overlooked in the next entry.
Although many DC fans work hard to get their way, even forced to change promotional materials, some battles seem simply impossible. With ample fan support behind Gunn and a strong track record to boot, it looks like his changes in the DCEU’s clothes will stand out.
Even Gunn himself isn’t entirely sure his next DC movie will revolve around the squad, but it’s unlikely the franchise will return to its Ayer-centric roots. However, tough news about Suicide Squad’s future is still on hold, so it seems only time will tell which direction the off-kilter team will go next.
