Thor 5 Release Date: When Could It Fit Into The MCU Phases 6-7?
Marvel Studios’ future continues to fill the theatrical state following the announcement of Phases 5 and 6 at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.
Two months later, Deadpool 3 has been officially announced and slated for a recently shifted September 6, 2024 release date. Ryan Reynolds will be joined by a surprise co-star, as Hugh Jackman is now set to reprise his role as Wolverine.
Something missing from any future plans was another installment in the Thor franchise. Chris Hemsworth is set to return as the God of Thunder, and Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is set to lead a third Thor film when he returns to star.
However, future slates are filling up quickly, and where a potential Thor 5 might be released is unclear. The fifth Thor film may never release, but if it does, when could it hit the big screen.
5 Possible Release Dates for Thor 5
Phase 5 is almost certainly ruled out for Hemsworth’s theoretical fifth solo film, what happens with Deadpool 3 with 12 or 13 films in that slate. There’s a lot of potential for another electrifying adventure in Phase 6.
February 14, 2025, is an open date on Disney’s calendar set to feature a Marvel release. This will put Hemsworth back in action near the start of Phase 6, before the final battle between Avengers: Kong Dynasty (May 2, 2025) and Secret Wars (November 7, 2025).
There’s another open Marvel slot on July 25, 2025, neatly placing Thor 5 three years after its fourth flick. This will be a (potentially) more significant date in the MCU slate as it happens among the highly anticipated Avengers movies of the same year.
Moving on from Phase 6, a theatrical release date is planned by Disney and Marvel after 2025.
Possible Phase 7, hitting February 13, 2026, is expected to be the first Marvel film to be released since Secret Wars. Very similar to Black Widow, it could serve as a longtime MCU actor/character swan song, with Thor receiving an unprecedented fifth solo outing after a long, heroic journey.
Giving this franchise four years of breathing room, July 24, 2026, is another summer blockbuster option. Thor: Love and Thunder did well during a similar time frame this year and the hero who doesn’t care about long hair is a fit for the summer month.
Nine years after Thor: Ragnarok, Thor may return in the last month of the year. November 6, 2026 serves as another date allotted for Marvel Adventure. Nayak’s third outing released in November 2017 and became the highest-grossing Thor film at the global box office – a proving month for God of Thunder.
When will Thor 5 release?
To begin with, Thor 5 may never have existed. Assembling a creative team with Hemsworth’s return for another solo adventure may not be any of the plans Marvel Studios has.
At the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel Studios included a tag in the credits that read “Thor will be back.” However, this could very easily have happened in The Cong Dynasty, Secret Wars, or any other crossover event.
Despite that (seemingly) confirmation that Hemsworth will be back, the actor doesn’t seem 100% locked in.
If Thor 5 was announced yesterday, the most likely time for release would be during Phase 6. Hemsworth is unlikely to continue his journey as the God of Thunder in the third Marvel Studios saga.
Judging by the full MCU schedule, July 25, 2025 can be considered the most appropriate. A more likely sequel, Doctor Strange 3, will likely release before the fifth Thor and could be slated for a February 2025 date.
Thor fans may be saddened to learn the reality that Thor may never have his own solo movie again. At least anytime soon or with Hemsworth on top. Sequel films featuring characters such as Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, or The Eternals are more likely to be released in the next few years.
